TOY NEWS FOR 4/21/2013 - SQUARE ENIX - PLAY ARTS KAI - MAN OF STEEL - SUPERMAN & GENERAL ZOD

So, I finally picked up my very first Play Arts figures with the Arkham City Batman and Catwoman. From looking at the Play Arts figures, I always thought they were very clunky looking, and I wasn't a huge fan of the anime-ish styling of the US or movie characters faces. Also the airbrushing on the faces always looked too dark and sloppy.

In-hand, I do like the two I purchased. At $60 bucks each, they're a little pricey for what they are, but overall, I'm pretty happy with them. Batman, however, is exactly how I expected him to be-- clunky. Hard to stand. (Why Play Arts doesn't include stands I'll never know. Or at least make some that we can buy!)

I'd have to say that Play Arts-- for the most part-- are in the realm of "cool", but not "awesome". And that's pretty much how I feel about these upcoming Superman and Zod figures from the Man of Steel film.

The body looks good, but the face on Superman... It's too anime. I'd prefer a much more accurate likeness. If you're going to do a movie figure, it's gotta look like that actor these days. This isn't the 70's, 80's or 90's anymore. If other major companies to do accurate likenesses, then Play Arts needs to step it up and do it, too.

The Zod, while still very slightly anime looking, is much better than the Superman. I really hope they tweek his head a little more before its release to make it at least as good as Zod's.

Hooray for inflation, because Square Enix is going to be charging 79.99 each for these, as opposed to the usual 59.99 - 64.99 of most of their other releases. I'm not sure why there's such a huge jump, but it might put off a lot of collectors. I know it's put me off!

If you plan on buying them anyway, they'll be out in August.
